Umbilical explores concepts of interdependence across borders/bodies/biomes. This work is curious about what the performer as a person and/or body is entwined with; and how we resist and/or uphold borders. In the development of this work in mid 2023, the performers were presented the difficult challenge of not breaking ‘Hyphen’s’ fragile boundaries while utilising the sculptures in their own ways. Built as two inherently interlocked rings, the sculpture functions as a theoretical and tangible framework in the exploration of fragile borders.
